Dog Day Afternoon

100s of hairy and scary dogs showed up in ric-diculous outfits at the corner of 18th & Texas for Farley’s 17th Annual Pet Parade on Saturday….Trick or Treat, bitches pootches.

Thrills & Spills On Bernal Hill

The Fast and The Furious flew down Bernal Heights Blvd Sunday afternoon at no more than 10 MPH for The 16th Annual Illegal Soapbox Derby Race.

Founded in 1992, this group of rogue racers meets the 4th Sunday of each October. The only requirement for vehicle entry is that each derby must contain a beer holder.

The Usual Suspects Executive Staff Members from Telstar Logistics, SFist, Mesh Mag, and Laughing Squid were also on hand to cover the event.

The Freaks Come Out At Dolores Park

War, what is it good for? Well, for starters — its good for firing up a few hundred residents to march from Civic Center to Dolores Park to show distaste for the current administration in Wash-DC.

There were several hundred boots set up in a symbolic mass grave. Each boot represented one fallen CA citizen who lost their life Over There.

Now if a protest goes down in City Limits, you know the homey Frank Chu is gonna be there.

965,000 Galaxies!!

“Good to see you, Frank.
“You too.”
“Are you here for the Anti-War thing, or the Thriller Dance-Off??”
“Both, I guess. More for the Thrilling”.
“Word. Me too.”

When I first heard of the “Thrill The World” dance-off I decided this was either going to be the stupidest or the funniest thing I had ever seen.

5:32 minutes of pure awesome-ness:

BENET aka BNE

Heres an Oldie-But-Goodie: The Keyser Söze of graff artists, BNE, rocks the top of a SRO hotel off Sleazy Sixth Street.

Sight-Ems

View of the double-decks of The Bay Bridge near Rincon Alley & Bryant Streets.

Now You See Me….Now You Don’t

PAEDAY rocks the 3rd Street side of a Mariposa warehouse rapid-fire style.

The next morning, hocus pocus….Poof!! Buffed.

Sight-Ems

Seen at the corner of Mason & Vallejo near Washington Square Park in the North Beach sector.

The San Francisco Treat

The inventor of Rice-A-Roni died in his sleep last Thursday in Napa Valley. Vincent DeDomenico, the son of Italian immigrants, first concocted the chicken flavored rice mix in The Mission in 1958. Over the years, he added 6 more flavors to the line-up.

A Nice Day For An Afternoon

Western view of The City from The Blue and Gold Fleet on a warm summer day.

Lights Out SF?

There was a lot of buzz going around last week about The City flipping all of its switches for 1 hour Sat nite in an organized mass black out. Lights Out SF encouraged residents, business owners & city officials to fade-to-black in an effort to raise awareness for energy conservation.

So at 8p last nite, I was expecting to look out the window and see an absolute absence of light (top foto). But what I saw was not too different than any other night (bottom foto).

That said, most major landmarks did go dark and even Google participated.

Sight-Ems

The Cavern Pt. 1

Part 1 of a 2 part series taking a look at “The Cavern”….

Deep below street level in the Mariposa CalTrain tunnel there are several walls of graff dating back to the Mid-80s.

Our friend Cassidy @ The Graffiti Archeology Project has an ill Flash site up where you can view the different parts of the yard and peel back the layers — tracking how it has progressed over the years.

Sight-Ems

Seen at United Nations Plaza in the Civic Center.

Tropical Paradise

Palm Trees
are not indigenous to The City — despite that fact 1000s of them have been trans-planted into our fertile soil over the past 15+ years.

Cost of 1 palm tree (x 1000+): $15k
Cost of maintenance & water for each tree annually: $5k

See them flourishing on The EMB, Octavia Blvd, Sleazy Sixth, Pac Bell Park, Dolores Park & The Presidio.

The Little Festival With A View

Saturday we crawled up to the top of De Haro Street for The Potrero Hill Festival.

Inside The Nabe, we found what appeared to be The Worlds Oldest Performing Jazz Band.

Back outside, a dozen Over-The-Hill Hot-Steppers line danced to a Lil John classic.

YEAAAAH!!! WHAAAAAT???:

Theres No Business Like Joe’s Business

And for about 60 days there will be no business at Orignal Joe’s, at all.

A kitchen fire erupted into the sky Friday morning, shutting the famed resto down for repairs. Fire investigators are shown below sifting thru the rubbage.

Located on Taylor near Eddy in the armpit of The Tenderloin, Original Joe’s has been a neigborhood fixture for 70+ years.

“We have everyone from the head politician to the head prostitute in here, and we love them all,” says owner Joe Duggan. “But the person who really makes us Original Joe’s is the common man.”

Wall Of Fame

Directly across the street from the big red doors of 111 Minna is a Collabo-Piece by The Pacific Art Collective, called “The Exchange.”

The mural went up in late August and was the first time many of these All-City artists had met face to face.

All-Star members of this crew include: SEVER (LA), REVOK (LA), EWOK (LA), YES 2 (NYC), BATES (Copenhagen), ESTEME (Philly), PERSUE (SD), SNOW (NJ), SERCH (Holland), TOTEM 2 (Atl), KACAO 77 (Berlin), AROE (UK), & RIME (LA).

Sight-Ems

A view of One Rincon Hill looking East from 5th near Harrison.

Drinks With Frank Chu

Enter 111 Minna around 9-ish.

Out of the corner of my eye I spot our friend Frank Chu and his colorful sign.

Hes up to 895,000 Galaxies now — surely this is cause for CELEBRATION!!

“Frank, can I buy you a drink?”
“Ill take a Hurricane.”
“Yikes, I gotta work tommorrow. Are you sure?”
“Yeah.”

“Bartender, a Hurricane please for me and Frank.”

And for a brief moment in time it seemed that all was well in at least 1 of many, many Galaxies.

Seen (or scene) under 280 near 16th Street in the SOMA sector.

Hells Angels Motorcycle Club

Founded in 1954, The Hells Angels original SF headquarters was on Folsom Street in SOMA. In the 1970s they relocated to their current location off Tennessee in Potrero’s Dogpatch sector.

The clubhouse is 1 part saloon, 1 part pool hall, and 1 part museum. You can usually find a few of them hanging out on the front porch chain-smoking cigs and shooting dirty looks at trespassing foto-bloggers.

Our friend The SF Masher interviewed one of the founding members, Sonny Barger, a couple of years ago — you can read that here.

The White Whale

In addition to 6 fighter jets flying very loudly over The City these past few days — an Air Bus A-380 Super Jumbo exposed itself briefly above The Bay on Friday.

In the top foto you can see the massiveness of this plane compared to the regular sized smaller one in the upper left.

SFO is the first airport in the country to begin servicing this behemoth, which can uncomfortably hold up to 800 passengers.

My hero
over at Telstar Logistics has a great write-up on its Bay Area premier.

The Blue Angels Are Here Pt. 2

Part 2 of a 2 part series looking at The Blue Angels….

Look up in the sky!!

Its a bird….no….its a plane….no….its six F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets moving very quickly thru the fog free skies. Saturday it was front and center as Those Angels in Blue pulled off some aerial awesomeness above The Bay.

Im not a big fan of military action, especially our current involvement Over There. My awe simply comes from what it is — an incredible display of supreme technical skills while moving at 700+ MPH.

That said, this years performance was shadowed in local controversy.

The Blue Angels Are Here Pt. 1

Part 1 of a 2 part series looking at The Blue Angels….

Masters of Fly-Entology or Professors of Trick-Nology??

Term-O-Nology aside: The Blue Angels are here playing in the clouds above The Bay as a part of Fleet Week festivities.

These fotos are from Thursdays and Fridays practice sessions in preparation for Saturdays Air Show.

Stay tuned for tomorrows coverage of aerial maneuvers such as: loopy-loops, barrel rolls, and the famous diamond formation.

Screaming At A Wall

El Girafa and MUSK get down with the get-down on a wall near Division and Harrison.

Royal Presidio of San Francisco

For 231 years, El Presidio Real de San Francisco has served as an army post for 3 nations, a temporary home for refugees during 2 earthquakes, and the grounds for 1 Worlds Fair.

Until a few years ago, The Presidio contained mostly rundown barracks and officers homes — each with a cannon in the front yard. They continues to operate a very old bowling alley and a very, very old cemetery.
